At age 68, Martha retired from a 40-year career and went to Zambia as a Peace Corps Response Volunteer, working for one year in a program for HIV/AIDS prevention. This amazing and enriching experience has embedded Africa in Martha’s heart. Martha will pique participant interest in considering such an “outside the box” opportunity to expand their thinking about retirement.
Martha will share insights about her life in Zambia at the community level, particularly as an older adult female in a culture that has a different way of valuing Age and Experience. The concept of ‘household’ includes numerous generations living together, and this provided a remarkable learning opportunity. She will also talk about how she decided on this volunteer path rather than the usual route. Finally, participants will share some examples of an ideal volunteer experience ~ something they have done or would like to do.
